Where God's People Rested

Exodus 15:22, 27

Once upon a time a great many people left their homes and started to move to a new country. They had to walk all the long way. The little boys and girls and even the old grandfathers and grandmothers had to walk, too. They did not have automobiles such as we have today.

Sometimes the road, which they traveled, led through pleasant places, where the ground was smooth and easy to walk upon. Sometimes it led across hills and through valleys, where the ground was rough; then they would feel very tired. It was not an easy journey.

One day these travelers came to a desert place. Everywhere they looked they saw sand and rocks. The sun shone down so warm upon their heads that soon they felt tired and thirsty. But they kept right on, for they were following a great leader called Moses. This man, Moses, knew they would find a nice camping place ahead. Without him they would have been lost many times in the desert places.

By and by they saw a grove of tall palm trees. When they arrived in the grove they found twelve wells of cool water and seventy palm trees. This place was called Elim. The people were glad to rest in the shade of the trees and to drink water from the wells.
